Following the US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and deregulation initiatives, the pulp and paper industry faces a shifting environmental landscape. Despite potential governmental changes, a fundamental desire for clean air and water persists among both industry and the public. The industry anticipates maintaining some testing and voluntarily improving practices due to corporate responsibility and competitive pressures. Public scrutiny, stemming from past actions, remains a significant factor influencing industry behavior. While easily visible pollution is addressed, disagreements arise over microscopic and olfactory issues. Ultimately, even without regulations, public opinion would likely deter environmentally irresponsible practices.
